The Hidden Cost of Success

Over the years, one conversation has come up more times than I can count. Not when someone is struggling. Not when they’re trying to get ahead.

It’s when they’re already successful.

The income is strong. The mortgage is under control. The investments are growing. The nice cars are in the driveway. You’ve built a lovely home. Holidays are becoming more regular. On paper, life looks exactly as you’d hoped.

Then they’ll look at me and ask,
“John… what’s next?”

I don’t think we talk enough about this.

For years, life has a scoreboard. Build the business. Get the promotion. Grow your wealth. Create opportunities for your family. Then one day you wake up and realise you’ve achieved many of the things you spent years chasing.

Without even noticing, it’s easy to default to one word.

More.

More money. More success. More.

The problem is, more never has a finish line.

One thing I still believe wholeheartedly is that if you’re not growing, you’re dying. But I’ve also learnt that growth isn’t always measured by a bigger bank balance.

Sometimes growth is becoming a better husband. A better parent. A better leader. A better friend.

Sometimes it’s having the courage to redefine what success looks like.

Because maybe the question isn’t,
“What’s next?”

Maybe it’s,
“Who do I want to become next?”
